How long has music been concidered more then just entertainment?

How long has the idea of music being more then just entertainment been around for?  It has been around since ancient times.  The Ancient Greeks knew that music was more then just entertainment.  The philosophers and law makers had very strong opinions about the power of music.  The requirements one had to meet to be a performer or composer or teacher wern't so much about their knowledge of music, but what kind of person they were.  Integrity and responsibility were very important measurements one had to meet, markers that were set quite high, because they Greeks believed that musicians had a very big influence over people, esspecally the young people.  There was even legilation against composers and musicians.  In Ancient Greece you could be thrown in prison if you went out bounds of the laws placed on music.  How could music have such a powerful influence?  I will get into that later as a go along.
